What are Scottish Highland cattle?

An old beef breed from the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles, known for long horns and a shaggy double coat: an oily outer layer that sheds rain and a soft undercoat for warmth.

They are hardy, forage well, and are known for a calm temperament when handled regularly.

How big do Highland cattle get?

They are a moderate, slower-maturing breed. Mature cows commonly weigh around 900 to 1,300 pounds and bulls around 1,500 to 1,800 pounds, depending on bloodline and feed.

Can Highland cattle handle Tennessee summers?

Yes, with shade, good water and pasture. They shed part of their coat in warm weather. We plan breedings so calves arrive in the cool months rather than in summer heat, which is easier on cow and calf.

How long is a Highland pregnancy?

About 283 days, typically between 277 and 290. We calculate every due date from the breeding date and confirm pregnancy with a blood test around 28 days after AI.

When can a Highland heifer have her first calf?

Highlands mature slowly. We plan a heifer’s first calf at around two years old or later, once she is well grown.

How long do Highland cattle live?

They are known for longevity. Cows commonly keep calving into their teens, and our foundation cow, Brianna, is eleven and expecting again.

What does AHCA registration mean?

The American Highland Cattle Association (AHCA) keeps the breed registry for Highland cattle in the United States. A registered animal has a unique number and a recorded pedigree, which protects the value of the animal and its future calves.

Every registration number on this website is issued by the AHCA, so you can look it up yourself.

What do AI, PV and D mean after a registered name?

AI: the animal was conceived by artificial insemination. PV: parentage verified by DNA. D: the animal’s DNA profile is on file with the AHCA.

An animal can carry one, two or all three.

What colors do Highland cattle come in?

Red, black, yellow, dun, white and brindle, with plenty of shade in between. Our herd includes red, black, yellow, dun and white.

Can I keep just one Highland?

Please don’t. Cattle are herd animals and are stressed when kept alone. Plan on at least two, or a companion of another grazing species.

What do Highland cattle need?

Good pasture or hay, fresh water, minerals, a windbreak or simple shelter, and sturdy fencing. Their horns need room at feeders and gates.
